How To Give Up Shopping or at least cut down
How To Give Up Shopping (or at least cut down)
Read any finance book and it will tell you to spend less and save more.
But a financial planner telling an over-shopper to simply save more
money is like a marathon runner telling an obese person to just exercise
more. Where do you start? How do you go from finding refuge in retail
therapy to being able to walk past the shops with your savings intact?
Stressed out, time-poor and addicted to the buzz of a newly purchased
item, Neradine Tisaj had a shopping problem. But when she opted to turn
over a new leaf and start saving, no one could offer her the advice that
related to her lifestyle.
Determined to enjoy life and save money, Neradine devised a plan to find
a way back to conscious, healthy spending, and so How To Give Up
Shopping was born.
Packed with truly helpful tips and anecdotes, How To Give Up Shopping is
a must read for anyone who needs to cut down on their spending.
How To Give Up Shopping is broken down into seven accessible chapters,
including:
Why do we over-shop?
The shopping detox – have you been in your cupboards lately?
Sales are not your friend and credit cards are the devil’s work.
Sorry, but you cannot shop your way to inner happiness.
Why did you decide to write How To Give Up Shopping?
Neradine Tisaj : I guess I was looking for something for myself,
I released I had a problem when I purchased two of the same shirts, I
over-shopped. I visited Financial Planners who told me to save but the
problem was I didn’t know how to do that! I researched and I couldn’t
find anything for me, so I wrote the book for people in the same
situation as me.
Who is this book for?
Neradine Tisaj : The shopaholic and the over-shopper. I have
been told that others got a lot out of it, they became curious about
what they were spending their money on and remembered old
hobbies.
Why do you think we are addicted to that buzz we get when we buy
something, even if it is just food?
Neradine Tisaj : It is mostly women, they love the buzz, I think
it is also a stress release and a hobby. It is also quite quick to do,
it’s not like Yoga you don’t have to sign up and attend the class every
week.
Is this why we over-shop?
Neradine Tisaj : Stress and Bordem as well, I think. We are
programmed with bad habits, it is like junk food and drinking a glass of
wine when we get home at night, we know it is wrong but it is stuck into
our time set. You only have to go to the shopping center on the weekend
to see it is packed, shopping is used as a form of
entertainment.
How can we stop adding purchases to our already-maxed credit card?
Neradine Tisaj : We need a shopping detox for a couple of week
or a month. Then you see how you feel when you spend, if you can’t do
this, keep a shopping diary, you write down what you spend and how you
felt when you made that purchase. If you have to buy only use cash. We
need credit cards to live to travel and pay bills but you don’t have to
have it with you all the time. Also write a list of twenty cheap things
that you enjoy doing and put it in your wallet. Don’t take your credit
card shopping only take your license and cash.
How did you begin saving?
Neradine Tisaj : I did a shopping detox and all of the other
tips in the book. They all worked for me it’s just trial and error. I
used to go late night shopping and shopping on the weekend so I had to
stop that. Shopping can be done socially and alone, that is one of the
problems. If you are shopping socially it is better to organise a coffee
date or go to the movies this is a lot cheaper than a new pair of
shoes.
What is your best saving tip?
Neradine Tisaj : The detox, not buying anything but food. If I
need to buy something I would save up the cash and plan the purchase.
How is it possible to reward yourself for saving without spending?
Neradine Tisaj : Yes. I think we don’t give time to ourselves.
We don’t go to the beach for an afternoon or go to the park or even sit
down to watch our favourite television show. No one has baths and
afternoon naps on the weekend, it is better to reward yourself with
time.
Neatly packaged and irreverent in its style, How To Give Up Shopping is
perfect for the reader who wants information on how to kick their
shopping habit, and fast.
