Southern Melbourne welcomes Macro & the goodness of organic food
Macro Wholefoods Market 40 Bluff Road, Black Rock, Victoria
New Store is Now Open!
The Victorian bayside suburb of Black Rock embraced an organic lifestyle as it welcomed Australia’s largest organic retailer, Macro Wholefoods Market on Tuesday 4 July.
"Although Black Rock is one of the smaller Macro stores, a lot of thought has gone into the layout and range available....And it would seem that it is off to a good start, out doing some of the larger stores on it's first day! Macro Wholefoods Market is a breath of fresh air into the local and surrounding suburbs of Black Rock & Bayside. Long overdue is this fresh approach to healthy living. Gone are the days when you associate 'organic' with fruit and vegetables that look destorted & brown, they are fresh, beautifully presented, and best of all delicious and bursting with flavour. The stores support local farmers, and after chatting with some of the farmer, it is clear what a labour of love 'organic' is! No chemicals can be used so it's back to the old fashioned elbow grease when it comes to weeding. The staff at Macro are informed & helpful, so whether you are pregnant, a young conscientious mother, have specific dietry requirements or just into looking after you and your families health & wellbeing, you can be sure to find everything here. I look forward to becoming a regular at my new local Macro." - Editor
Macro Black Rock is the fifth store in Macro’s rapid national expansion plans, which have been fuelled by the ever-increasing number of Australians who are seeking retail outlets that support sustainable living by offering organic products, naturopathy as well as environmentally-friendly products and the opportunity to support Fair-trade businesses and Australian farmers.
The Macro Black Rock store will measure 500 square metres of wall-to-wall organic goodness including a Macro Café, Macro Naturopathy and Macro’s famous selection of organic Groceries & Produce. Shopping at Macro Black Rock is designed to be a user-friendly and pleasurable experience; the store has plenty of customer parking, staff are friendly with excellent product knowledge and the store looks beautiful too with a well designed layout and features that create a natural ambience.
Macro’s move to suburban Black Rock follows the growing trend in Australia towards ‘conscious consumption’ by all consumers, with more and more people making intelligent choices in the purchases that they make, particularly when it comes to the food that they consume and this is confirmed by the fact that 'organics' is the fastest growing category in the food industry in Australia as well as overseas.
This trend has been recently documented by Princeton Professor Peter Singer and co-author Jim Mason in their book 'The Ethics of What We Eat' which features a chapter on Macro Wholefoods and was published by Text Publishing in May 2006.
"Over the last thirty years we’ve seen the first stirrings of a different kind of concern about what we eat. Consumers are increasingly seeking out organically produced food, for reasons that range from ethical concern for the environment to a desire to avoid ingesting pesticides and the conviction that organic food tastes better than food from conventional sources." [1]
The growth of the organic industry in Australia has been mirrored and pushed by Macro’s developments over the last twelve months which includes three organic supermarket openings (Richmond VIC in Sept 05, Glen Waverley VIC in March 06 and Black Rock VIC in July 06) as well as the expansion of the original Macro store in Sydney’s Bondi Junction in May.
"There are many reasons that shoppers are attracted to Macro including the health and environmental benefits presented by our great range of organic food," says Macro Wholefoods Market co-owner Pierce Cody. "And everyday more and more shoppers are choosing Macro to vote with their dollar to support ethical and sustainable business practices."
To assist in the switch to organics that many Australians are making, Macro has launched free ‘Macro Discovery Tours’ in their Victorian stores to help de-mystify the new retail paradigm and experience that Macro offers.
Marisa Angelico an organic food devotee and health enthusiast hosts free tours, either one-on-one or in small groups, with fellow shoppers and through her practical experience of living an organic lifestyle Marisa provides practical advice on anything from understanding organic certification labels, benefits of whole food diet, shopping organic on a budget and as well as recipe ideas for gluten-free coeliac shoppers.
