Tiffani Wood, Katie Underwood and David Tydd
Tiffani Wood, Katie Underwood and David Tydd embark on their national
tour of Valentino beginning on February 13 in Canberra. The tour runs
through till April 11th finishing up in Queensland.
Tiffani and Katie are back together seven years after splitting from the
pop group, Bardot for David Tydd musical, Valentino. Tiffani Wood stars
as Valentinos lover, Natacha, while fellow Bardot member Katie
Underwood plays the Hollywood glamour girl, Betsy. br>
David Tydds Valentino embraces Rudolph Valentinos dramatic struggle
to fame set against the spectacular backdrop of 1920s Hollywood with all
its glamour and romance.
Tell me a little bit about David Tydds Valentino?
Tiffani Wood: Its set in the 1920s in the silent movie era where
the man responsible for bringing Latin dance to the world Valentino (
Michael) is busy becoming a star. He has a big Boss, head of the studio
Max ( Normie Rowe) and a Hollywood hottie Besty ( Katie Underwood) who
plays with the boys and is a lot of the time drunk hehe shes a funny
character. There are lots of spectacular dance routines in all different
forms of Latin and acrobatics along with original songs. Its a very
diverse multicultural show and will take you through the trials and
tribulations of Valentino and fellow characters journeys behind the
scenes of the studio and with what goes on there.
Who do you play in Valentino?
Tiffani Wood: I play Valentinos love interest Natacha Rambova.
She's the set and costume designer for the 1920s silent movie era. Shes
ahead of her time dressing more 1930s and is like a mother hen to the
girls and a bit sarcastic to the men but in a nice way.
Are you anything like your character?
Tiffani Wood: Im definitely similar in that I have sarcasm
towards men hehe and I like to think I have a creative flair like her
but other than that our similarities probably end there.
Is this a different experience from your normal line of work?
Tiffani Wood:Yes and no. I was in a musical "Las Vegas the
musical" late last year and so its not a totally new thing and it
includes dancing and singing that Ive done since I was little. The main
difference is the acting side. Although I act in film clips etc Ive
never really played anyone (except in the last musical) other than a
version of myself so its been a new experience, and Ive been really
lucky to have such a veteran as Normie Rowe helping and giving great
hints, tips and advice to do with acting and stage presentation as its
also different than a pop concert from the eye lines to the crowd, voice
projection and character analysis.
Are you excited to work with your past band member again?
Tiffani Wood: Sure am, Katie was my roommate in the very
beginning with Bardot and weve been friends ever since. She was a big
loss to Bardot especially in the form of Vocal strength and personality.
I knew id work with her again one day and the day has come and she
hasnt changed a bit :) we have so much catching up to do.
Have you had much contact with each other since Bardot spilt, seven
years ago?
Tiffani Wood:A lot in the beginning as I used to go to Melbourne
all the time to song write so Id stay over at her house and go out and
chill. Then because she lives in Melbourne and Im in Sydney just
distance and sometimes schedules have kept our visits to a minimum, so I
probably havent officially seen her since maybe 2004, but have kept up
to date via good old Facebook etc
What is different about singing in a theatre opposed to a concert?
Tiffani Wood: Its a lot more strict, in the way of you usually
have and MD ( musical director) who tells you how something should be
sung as opposed to in a pop concert when your being yourself you can
mainly sing how you like. But with this production it hasnt been as
tight reigned in the form of vocals so Ive been able to put my own spin
of my songs which has been fantastic.
David Tydds Valentino will leave you breathless!
